Mauritius Transportation |
 |
The country may be entered by air or by sea, and there are regular flights between the island and all the continents. While being on the island you may choose between taxis, buses or renting a car.
By Air
• Air Mauritius, Air Europe, Air France, Air Zimbabwe, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Condor, South African Airways and Emirates Airlines operates international flights between Mauritius and all the continents.
Air Mauritius and Catovair are the only airline to serve Rodrigues and normally operates two daily flights.
Located in the southeast of the island, the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) consists of an international and domestic terminal featuring duty free shopping, banking and currency exchange, restaurants and lounge. Car rental and taxis are also available.
• Air Mauritius Helicopter offers sightseeing tours, passenger transfer, aerial photography and filming flights services.
By Land
In Mauritius, one drives on the left side of the street. Roads are sometimes narrow and uneven with inadequate lighting, which makes night driving hazardous. Speed limits are posted in kilometers per hour, but all road and traffic signs are posted in English.
• Prices for car rental are quite high. There are all sorts and types of cars available for rent, from cheap economy cars up to luxury cars. The average daily rental rate of a car is between US$60 and US$110. The driver should be at least 21 years old and be the holder of an International Drivers Licence.
• Taxis can be rather expensive although there is an official tariff, which generally is not respected - US$0.35 per km (from 05:00 am - 20:00 pm) and US$0.50 (night tariff). For longer trips, you can discuss the price before embarking. If you are in a hotel, ask for guidance at the reception.
• Public transportation by bus is available between the main towns until 11:00 pm and in remote areas until 6 pm.
